The EC requires the United Kingdom to define its access to the single market

Ursula von der Leyen referred to the future relations that the EU and the United Kingdom must specify once Brexit is held on January 31st

The president of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, urged the United Kingdom this Sunday, January 12, to decide what type of access it wants to have in the future of the European Union (EU) market, after its departure from the community club.

After an encounter with the Austrian Chancellor, Sebastian Kurz, the official said that at this time “it is up to our British partners to decide what type of access they want to the European market, which is the largest in the world.”

In addition, the community president said that as of February 1st, the United Kingdom will remain integrated into the community structures complying with European Union regulations “but we will have to look for new ways and approaches for the future”, adding that “the question of how close or distant we will be facing the internal market, is something that we will still have to discuss and refine.”

Likewise, the high official said the importance of the United Kingdom defining its access to the European market “the closer the United Kingdom stays and the closer it is to our internal market rules, the better it will be for them, for their access, but upside down too.”

Once the transition period is over, a new bilateral treaty between London and Brussels must enter into force in order to avoid a scenario similar to that of a brexit without agreement.
