Sebastián Piñera died at the age of 74

The former president of Chile died in a helicopter crash over Chilean Lake Ranco

Former Chilean president Sebastián Piñera died Tuesday in a helicopter crash, local media reported.

The accident occurred on Chilean Lake Ranco, leaving one dead and three injured, according to local sources. Piñera, 74, held the presidency of the South American country in the periods 2010-2014 and 2018-2022.

The Navy and the National Disaster Prevention and Response Service reported that one person was killed and three injured in the incident, which took place at Lago Ranco. However, no further official details were provided about the episode, according to BBC World.

Piñera, one of the richest men in Chile, is so far the only leader of the liberal center-right in the southern country who has managed to win the presidency of the Republic. During his tenure, he alternately shared power with Socialist President Michelle Bachelet.
