OMT and Globalia launch first call for tourism startups

This is the first and largest call involving 164 countries and will also accept emerging companies that want to transform this sector

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) joined the tourism consortium Globalia, for the launch of the first “WTO Tourism Startups Competition”. Both organizations are pioneers as it is the first and most ambitious call for companies and developers of startups aimed at transforming the tourism industry.

The best projects from 164 countries called to register will be analyzed until September 3 through the site www.tourismstartups.org. The jury will evaluate each proposal according to criteria such as “uniqueness and viability of the solution, potential impact, business model, scalability and profile of the team.”

In September there will be a preselection to then establish the winners, which will be those that offer the most innovative, talented solutions, including new technologies -particularly startups- and based on the new circular economy. Of course, everything related to sustainable tourism will not be left aside.

For the launch of the call, the WTO and Globalia have relied on the digital platform YouNoodle, which is currently an important reference of Silicon Valley in the search for startups worldwide.

Among the objectives that both organizations aim to achieve through the call is to create business models oriented to the future of travel, improvement of the traveler’s experience, environmental impact and community development.

Zurab Pololikashvili, secretary general of the UNWTO, pointed out that “innovation and tourism investments are not an end in themselves, but a means to promote better tourism products, improve the governance of tourism and take advantage of the proven sustainability of tourism, creating jobs and generating opportunities. “
