Nokia and NASA will take the 4G network to the Moon

The telephone company closed a contract to bring a telephone network to the lunar surface in the coming years

Finnish technology Nokia was awarded a contract by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to build a 4G mobile phone network on the surface of the Moon, the first network of its kind built on the surface of the satellite.

The telephone company explained that the deployment of the network will begin at the end of 2022 and will consist of an “ultra-compact” solution, with low consumption and high resistance. The company will partner with Intuitive Machines to integrate telecommunications technology into its lunar landers. Once on the surface, the network will configure itself automatically.

The network will allow the use of data transmission applications, including vital functions, lunar vehicle control, real-time navigation and high definition video streaming. “These communication applications are essential for the long-term presence of humans on the lunar surface.”

NASA’s goal is to prepare the lunar surface for long-term sustainable operations on the satellite in preparation for an eventual expedition to Mars.
