Mozilla launches browser test with new security mechanism

The developers bet on what Focus offers, an application dedicated to working with information privacy issues

Mozilla launched a test of the new version of its browser for devices with Android system in which it mixes the security features of Focus, its lightweight app focused on privacy, with “the comforts of a mobile browser with all functions” and with up to twice the speed of the current version of Firefox.

Firefox Preview, as the new beta is known, is a “pilot of our new browser for Android devices”, as explained by the company in a statement, and is now available to users in the testing phase. Its stable version is scheduled to arrive this fall.

The new browser of Firefox arrives with the aim of replacing the current version of Firefox inspired by Focus, the browser for Android and iOS of the company focused on security, “but with all the ease and comfort of a mobile browser with all the functions.”

The new application uses the GeckoView engine, the same tool that enables FireFox Focus functions, as an alternative to the Google Blink engine used by most current Android browsers and that provides greater flexibility in the development of security and privacy functions.

Among the features of Firefox Preview, Mozilla has especially highlighted its speed, since it is up to twice as fast as previous versions of Firefox for Android, as well as design aspects such as a “minimalist home screen” and the layout of the navigation bar on the bottom.

To facilitate the organization in Internet browsing, Preview Adds the Collections function, which allows users to save, organize and share collections of web pages, designed to facilitate daily tasks.

Another of the outstanding functions of the new Firefox for Android is the activation by default of the systems that protect users from “invasive crawlers of advertising and other harmful actors.”

Until the release of the definitive version of the new browser for Android, Focus and the current Firefox for Android will remain available, but Mozilla announced that it will interrupt the development of new functions for Focus.
