Minors spend about 4 hours a day on their screens

A Qustodio report determined that minors spend an average of 4 hours a day connected to screens outside their classrooms

An investigation carried out by the Qustodio platform entitled ‘From change to adaptation: living and learning in a digital world’, determined that minors spend an average of 4 hours connected to screens outside the classroom, for a total of 1,460 hours a year, which is equivalent to half the time a person spends sleeping.

The study was carried out last year and analyzed the information provided, anonymously, by 400,000 families with children between the ages of 4 and 18 in Spain, the United States and the United Kingdom and 1,200 interviews carried out in 2021.

As a consequence of the pandemic and confinement, 2020 was a year of changes where digitization became part of all the aspects that make up people’s lives and brought about a more digital normality.

The report reflects that in 2021 minors, globally, used 173 minutes a day to play Roblox. However, the average in Spain was 145 minutes a day. Although it is below the total average, for the country it meant a growth of 80.2% compared to 2020.

Other video games most used by Spanish minors are: Minecraft, with 34 minutes a day; Brawl Stars, 30 minutes per day; Clash Royale with 29 minutes a day and Among Us, 17 minutes a day.

Social networks gain ground among minors

During 2020 and 2021, social networks became the main protagonists. The use of these applications registered an increase equivalent to 11.1 % globally. However, Spain marked the difference, reporting a decrease of 1.9 %, about 50 minutes on average per day.

The application with the highest growth was Snapchat, with 82 % global growth, while in Spain it registered 71.4 %. The star application among minors was TikTok, with 41 % global and 57 % in Spain, growing 21.3 % by 2021.

Within the educational platforms, Duolingo stands out as the favorite, conquering the first place in the United States, the United Kingdom and Spain. While WhatsApp is crowned the most popular communication app, with an average of 34 % of active profiles in the analyzed markets.
