Mexico will develop sustainable electric power with IDB support

The financial institution approved a loan of US $ 108.6 million for private investment in the generation of electricity from geothermal sources

Mexico will launch the project for the production of electricity from geothermal sources thanks to a special loan of US $ 108.6 million granted by the Inter-American Development Bank.

The investment of this amount will be divided into the different stages of the project, which includes exploration, drilling, field conditioning, construction and operation of private geothermal projects.

Local authorities hope that the loan will allow them to produce 300 MW of geothermal capacity in 10 years, in addition to consolidating public funds in the sector and reaching investment levels of US $ 4.2 billion.

The country aims to dramatically reduce the emission of greenhouse gases to the environment to 25% by 2030. They also seek to generate more sustainable and profitable electricity, since it currently depends exclusively on fossil sources.

Christiaan Gischler, project leader and IDB geothermal thematic group, highlights the economic, social, environmental and even labor benefits of producing electricity from geothermal sources.
