Meta is planning to introduce payment plans on Instagram and Facebook for European users, so that they can use these social networks without advertising content and thus adapt to the data protection policies of the European Union (EU), which restrict their practices. of data collection.

The company led by Mark Zuckerberg implemented changes in order to adapt to the new regulations approved by the European Union, such as the Digital Services Law (DSA), which came into force on August 25 and which, among other things, prohibits the platforms includes ads based on the use of personal data of minors.

In addition, search engines and platforms must adhere to other EU rules, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). So much so, that last July, the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) endorsed that EU Member States could limit Facebook’s access to user web search data.

In this framework, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram is planning to introduce an option for EU users to subscribe to payment plans to use these social networks without advertising.

This was stated by sources close to Meta in statements collected by The New York Times, where they indicated that this new payment option is an alternative designed to comply with European Union regulations and at the same time allow users to continue using said social networks.

They also highlighted the way in which EU policies, in this case regarding data protection, can influence the user experience with technology compared to other countries such as the United States.
