IICA and Agbar Agriculture will promote the sustainable management of water resources in the agricultural sector of Latin America and the Caribbean

The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and Agbar Agriculture, from the Agbar group, signed a technical cooperation agreement with which they will seek to develop joint initiatives and projects linked to the smart and sustainable management of water resources in the agricultural sector of Latin America and the Caribbean.

The alliance will have an initial term of four years and its main objective is to optimize the use of water by improving processes and seeking alternative resources to be implemented in the countries of the region selected by both organizations.

Specifically, the areas of cooperation that the agreement will prioritize are those associated with the management of natural resources, climate change and the bioeconomy; rural development, productivity and competitiveness; information technology and social innovation.

The agreement was signed in an official virtual act by the Director General of IICA, Manuel Otero, and the Chairman of Agbar, Ángel Simón. Also participating in the signing of the agreement was the CEO of B2 International Consulting, Alexandre Barbosa, who worked to strengthen IICA-Agbar ties and will participate in the formulation of joint projects.

Agriculture with a human face

“The most important thing about the agreement is tomorrow and how we translate it into actions and projects that ultimately have to mean an improvement in the quality of life of the people of our continent and the world. We find ourselves in a very serious situation by water stress. It is time to move from diagnosis to action, and translate this into strategic projects; always thinking of agriculture with a human face and that it must be seen as part of the solution,” said the head of the hemispheric organization specializing in agricultural and rural development.

“Faced with current challenges, including climate change and the scarcity of water resources that greatly affect agricultural activity, at Agbar we are committed to alliances and technological innovation to optimize the use of water and the management of natural resources. We believe in an agricultural model of the future, which goes through environmental and socioeconomic sustainability, two fundamental and interrelated concepts”, highlighted, for his part, the president of Agbar.

As part of the alliance, both entities will exchange experiences and knowledge, provide direct advice, technical-scientific intermediation, among others, in the preparation and execution of projects related to the main objective of the synergy.
