Hackers steal crypto currencies using Outlook accounts

The affected company stated that hackers have accessed a Microsoft customer support account from which they obtain private information from users

Some users of Microsoft email Outlook have claimed that the security of their accounts was breached. The victims claim that the attackers accessed keys, passwords and confidential cryptographic information that allowed them to steal funds in cryptoactives.

Earlier this month, the company claimed that the attackers could access metadata, such as the subject lines of emails and the names of people with whom users of the compromised accounts communicated.

However, the problem has worsened. Now, attackers have been able to access email content from a large number of Outlook, MSN and Hotmail emails.

Jevon Ritmeester, one of the affected customers, said: “The hackers also had access to my inbox, which allowed them to reset the password for my Kraken.com account and remove my bitcoins.”

The attackers’ modus operandi is suspected of setting up an e-mail forwarding system. In other words, each time an email mentioned the term “Kraken”, their account automatically forwarded it to a Gmail address controlled by the attackers.

The system includes emails related to password reset and bitcoin removal requests sent by exchange platforms.
