Germany will work with renewable energy for LTE and 5G

Through Vodafone and Mowea, the German country will install a microturbine in the town of Torgelow

The mobile phone operator Vodafone launched in Germany a new concept to supply renewable energy to some of its LTE and 5G stations.

Together with the young Mowea company in Berlin, Vodafone put into operation the first “mobile turbine” in the town of Torgelow, in the federal state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

The LTE and 5G stations will be powered directly by electricity through four wind turbines at a height of 50 meters.

The project is part of a broader corporate strategy to supply Vodafone networks with renewable energy sources until 2022.

“Mobile phone antennas and wind turbines have something in common: both technologies require height to function effectively”, a Vodafone spokesman said.

In Torgelow, the first LTE site was equipped with four Mowea wind turbines, a company specialized in the development of modular wind energy systems.

Mowea’s idea was developed at the Technical University of Berlin, with the aim of standardizing small wind turbines and thus making them flexible and economical for companies.

Compared to large wind turbines, Mowea systems can be transported to the site and installed relatively easily and economically.

“We want to use more and more new energy sources for the mobile network in the country”, said Vodafone president Hannes Ametsreiter.
