European Commission will implement rules for 5G technology

The team in charge of this sector will set standards for the deployment of this band in the European Union (EU)

The European Commission will present on Wednesday a package of “strict” standards for the deployment of 5G networks in the European Union (EU), with the aim of mitigating the security risks that may arise from the development of this technology.

“It is not about discriminating, but simply setting rules. They will be strict, demanding, so that in Europe all operators who want to apply them in this network deployment will be welcomed,” summed up in a Europarliamentary appearance the Internal Market Commissioner, and also responsible of Industry and Telecommunications, the French Thierry Breton.

Countries like the United States and Japan excluded the multinational Huawei from their markets for fear that the brand will be used for spying by Beijing, but in the European Union security concerns have not closed the door completely to the manufacturer.

Breton thus advanced the basis of the proposal of new more stringent rules that will be presented this Wednesday to favor the deployment of 5G, a technology that requires a “totally different new architecture” to the networks used so far and from which the Community Executive has evaluated the risks at the request of the member states.

That is why, the parliamentarian explained to the MEPs, the Community Executive now proposes a “toolbox” to help the safe deployment of the new mobile technology, a work that will be presented based on analyzes already provided by the Member States.
