European Commission considers new budget is very promising

The European body argues that the proposal presented by Charles Michel is a "good starting point" for the negociations

The European Commission considers that the new proposal on the next long-term EU budget, drawn up by the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, is “a good starting point” for the negotiations, while highlighting that it introduces “fresh money” for the Fair Transition Fund and dedicates 25% of the resources to activities related to the European Green Pact.

“We believe it is a good starting point for negotiations in the European Council,” the chief executive of the Community Executive, Eric Mamer, said in a press conference.

Specifically, the draft prepared by the president of the European Council for the leaders summit on Thursday proposes a multiannual financial framework (MFF) for the 2021-2027 period of 1,074% of the gross national income (GNI) of the block, compared to 1,114% requested by the European Commission or 1,16% that represents the period that ends this year for the Twenty-seven.

Mamer mainly remarked that the document includes the Brussels proposal to allocate 7.5 billion euros of “fresh money” to the Fair Transition Fund and foresees that 25% of the total budget will be allocated to measures that favor the European Green Pact.

He also stressed that the draft of the president of the European Council proposes new EU own resources, which would be a tax of 0.80 cents per kilogram of unrecycled plastic and a part of the benefits generated by the European Emissions Trading System (STD in Spanish).

In any case, the community spokesman said that it is now up to Michel to advance negotiations which “are always very complicated”.
