Sony buys Crunchyroll from AT&T for 972 million euros

The production and distribution platform for animated series and films will now be Sony

Funimation Global Group, owned by Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sony Music Entertainment, has reached an agreement with the US operator AT&T to acquire the production and distribution platform for animated series and films Crunchyroll, for 1,175 million dollars (972 million euros).

At the end of last June, Crunchyroll reported that it had surpassed three million paying subscribers worldwide, as well as 70 million registered users.

“Together with Crunchyroll, we will create the best possible experience for fans and the greatest opportunity for creators, producers and publishers in Japan and beyond,” stated Tony Vinciquerra, President and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment.

The acquisition of the platform reinforces Sony’s presence in the sector of streaming Japanese animation series, since Funimation, which operates in the United States, Mexico and Brazil, owns Wakanim, which is present in France, Germany, the Nordic countries, Russia and other Eastern European countries.

It also has a stake in the Australian platform Madman Anime Group.
