Email is still the gateway for cyberattacks

An investigation carried out by Trend Micro determined that in 2022 55 % of cases were registered by email

Email has remained the primary avenue used by threat actors to spread their malicious campaigns, with 55 % of the cases reported by Trend Micro using it in 2022.

The cybersecurity company indicated in its Email Threat Report: Cybercriminal Tactics and Techniques Organizations Should Be Aware of that it blocked more than 146 billion threats targeting its customers over the past year.

Of these, email represented 55% of the threats, which is why it has once again become the largest vector of attacks, since last year’s analysis determined that this entry route concentrated 74 % of the threats. in 2021.

Trend Micro blocked more than 79.9 billion threats in 2022 from email alone, of which 39.9 million were high-risk and managed to bypass email providers’ native filters, as reported by the Trend platform. Micro Cloud App Security (CAS), which detects attacks that are already in progress and infiltration attempts by criminals.

From the company, they commented that in this exercise, the use of known malware attachments versus the unknown was common. While the former was easy to detect (although this time there was a 32 % drop in usage), unknown, newly created, zero-hour software is more difficult to identify and defend against.

More specifically, CAS identified and blocked 4,236,650 malicious files in 2022, that is, 29 % more than the figures registered in 2021. It was not the only thing that has grown in number, compared to the previous year, since the number of unknown malware files also grew to 3,757,812, or 46 % more.

From the organization that develops cybersecurity solutions, they commented that, after email, there are key points of attack in unpatched vulnerabilities, attacks on endpoints and OT/IoT environments.
