China seeks technological independence

Authorities in the Asian country made the decision to ban all foreign technology from government agencies

China has just announced the ban on foreign technologies in government agencies. According to a publication in the Financial Times, the authorities seek to “replace 30% of the hardware in state agencies next year, 50% in 2021 and the remaining 20% in 2022, according to estimates by China Securities,” according to requests Government and budgets.

The main reasons for this decision are the accusations of US espionage, the trade war that exists between the two nations and their effects on companies that are unable to establish trade agreements with other Western companies.

This is an ambitious plan through which China would have to replace 30 million devices between 2020 and 2022. This initiative will be supported by the Cyber Security Law that is in effect since 2017 and highlights the use of a “safe and controllable technology” in the country.

Although Beijing’s decision focuses on government institutions, the ban on foreign technology will be extended to other industries, such as finance, energy and telecommunications.

As an example of this change, Chinese banks are expected to move from IBM and Oracle technology to more diversified X86 architecture providers and then to fully manufactured hardware in China.
