Bitcoin ATMs in Colombia are used by Venezuelans and freelancers

ATMs have become one of the most popular options for cryptocurrencies exchange and trading

The cryptocurrency ATM company Athena Bitcoin has a total of 17 ATMs distributed in five cities in Colombia. Paradoxically, the devices are more used by people from Venezuela than by the residents of the country.

Venezuelans based in Colombia are the largest customer base that uses ATMs, followed by independent professionals working in the new technologies sector.

The director of Athena for Latin America, Matías Goldenhörn, says: “In Colombia there are many freelancers who receive their payments with bitcoin and use our ATMs to receive their cash. On the other hand, there are people who send remittances to Venezuela and use the devices. These are our two main types of users that we have in Colombia “

Similarly, Athena also has ATMs in Argentina, Mexico and Chile, but Colombia is the country where it has deployed the largest number of devices. In addition, it has plans to install a new ATM in the border city of Cúcuta, a place where thousands of Venezuelans cross daily.

Athena ATMs are designed to allow users to buy and sell digital coins without the need for bank accounts, debit or credit cards. The process takes about two minutes at most if balances are transferred to the user’s cell phone.
