Apple will repair the FaceID sensor individually

Apple authorized stores and services will agree to repair the iPhone FaceID sensor as an individual item without replacing the phone

Apple’s official technical service will support repairs to the FaceID sensor for facial recognition on iPhone as an individual item, without having to replace the entire phone as it is currently done.

Apple stores and company-authorized services will “soon” include work on the FaceID sensor individually among their repair services, MacRumors has learned, citing internal documents to which it has had access.

This novelty will allow to work on the TrueDepth camera module, where both the FaceID sensor and the front camera lenses are located, which will avoid having to replace the entire phone.

These repairs will be available for phone models from iPhone XS, leaving out iPhone X from 2017, the first to introduce FaceID, according to the aforementioned media.

It would be a way to reduce electronic waste, and also a service in principle more affordable for the customer, although the prices of the repair have not been shared.

The documents consulted also indicate that the official technical personnel will be able to use the diagnostic service to determine the type of work needed: the repair of the FaceID unit, the complete replacement of this unit or the repair of the “rear system of iPhone.”
