AI displaced bitcoin in Google searches

Google Trends data revealed that users were more interested in artificial intelligence than cryptocurrencies

In a notable turn, Google users show a marked shift in their search preferences, choosing to investigate more about Artificial Intelligence (AI) rather than “bitcoin” or “cryptocurrencies”. Recent data from Google Trends reveal that, throughout this year, interest in searches for “AI” has overtaken those related to cryptocurrencies, marking a significant shift since August 2022.

Searches related to “AI” experienced a notable increase in November 2022, coinciding with the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Since then, the gap between searches for “AI” and terms linked to cryptocurrencies has continued to widen, standing at a score of 91 for “AI” globally, compared to 22 for bitcoin, according to Google Trends’ scoring system, which measures the proportion of a topic to total searches.

This shift could be explained, in part, by the persistent slowdown of bitcoin, which has faced the last tails of a bearish cycle that stretched throughout the second half of 2021 and most of 2022. Although bitcoin has shown signs of recovery over the course of this year, its interest in searches has been overtaken by the ongoing fascination with advances in artificial intelligence.

Bitcoin, which started the year at $16,900, experienced an increase of 150%, reaching $43,400 at the time of writing, according to data from CoinMarketCap. Google Trends indicates that the most prominent interest in bitcoin comes from El Salvador, Nigeria, the Netherlands, Brazil and Switzerland.

In contrast, the field of artificial intelligence has witnessed an exceptional year in terms of advancements, from concern about job losses due to AI to the proliferation of AI-based services and enthusiasm for new chatbots such as ChatGPT, Google Bard, Meta AI and GrokAI, the latter launched by Elon Musk.

Google Trends data reveals a particular interest in AI among users in Vietnam, China, the Philippines and Myanmar, pointing to a growing global curiosity about this emerging technology.

The crypto community has also noticed this trend, as indicated by X user (formerly Twitter) of the crypto community Autism Capital in a post addressed to its 249,900 followers on December 26. One of the comments suggests that the disparity may be attributed to the fact that bitcoin and cryptocurrencies are relatively older subjects of interest compared to AI, which has gained attention more recently.

In July, AI consolidated its position as the clear winner among job seekers, surpassing searches for “crypto jobs” four times, a phenomenon attributable to the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022, which generated a significant increase in searches for “AI jobs,” according to analysis by crypto aggregator CoinGecko.
