Amazon bought podcast startup Wondery

E-commerce giant Amazon announced Wednesday that it has bought the emerging podcast firm Wondery after adding the podcast category to its Amazon Music platform last September.

Amazon did not disclose the amount of the acquisition, but The Wall Street Journal announced in early December that Wondery, founded four years ago and valued at $ 100 million, was negotiating its sale for more than 300 million.

“Wondery is an innovative podcast editor with a history of creating and producing top-notch podcasts that entertain and educate listeners, including ‘Dirty John’, ‘Dr. Death’, ‘Business Wars’ and’ The Shrink Next Door.” Amazon said in a note.

“When the deal closes, nothing will change for listeners and they will continue to be able to access Wondery podcasts through a variety of providers”, added the firm, which still has some conditions pending.

Amazon joined the podcast business last September to try to gain ground from rivals such as Spotify or Apple, which have differentiated themselves with their own products and have taken advantage of the popularity of their ‘streaming’ services to gain followers.

The company founded by the businessman and richest man in the world Jeff Bezos also owns Audible, which offers audiobooks and well-known podcasts such as “This American Life”, “Pod Save America” or “You’re Wrong About”.

After the news broke, Amazon shares were down 0.83% amid a generally positive session on Wall Street.
