IDB: Venezuela will be the biggest socio-economic challenge

The international organization maintains that the South American country faces a severe financial crisis, amid the pandemic that affects the world

The president of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), Mauricio Claver-Carone, spoke about Venezuela, arguing that the nation will be the greatest socio-economic challenge that the institution will face in the region.

“The migration crisis in Venezuela is of a level of severity than the problem of refugees from Syria was at its worst. But in terms of financing, the international community has only given 10% of the resources it provided to the crisis in Syria, “he warned.

The first and senior IDB official said that countries such as Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Argentina and Trinidad and Tobago are feeling the burden and the additional fiscal stress caused by the Venezuelan problem and the effect it has on issues such as health and education.

Venezuela needs support

“It is a global problem and there has to be a global response. We, obviously, are going to continue helping, looking for creative mechanisms,” Claver-Carone said.

The president of the Inter-American Development Bank anticipated that this institution will work with whoever wins the elections on November 3 in the United States. He ruled out that a possible change of government would affect his negotiations with the US Congress in search of more resources.
