United States insists Europe freeze Huawei’s 5G technology

So far, the US has been the only superpower to have imposed such a strict ban on Huawei

As 5G technology takes over the world, the United States joins forces to convince its best allies like Europe to ban all mobile technology provided by Huawei, one of the largest telecommunications manufacturers in the world.

To understand this panorama, it is necessary to remember what happened between the aforementioned Chinese company and the American superpower in 2018, when the US claimed that the use of Huawei’s 5G technology could provide China with the ability to spy through “back doors” built into their software.

Such accusation led the United States to issue an arrest warrant against Huawei’s chief financial officer, Meng Wanzhou, accusing him of “conspiracy to defraud various international institutions” and thus stealing trade secrets.

Will Europe agree with the restriction?

Although the US persists, European leaders like Britain’s Boris Johnson completely rejected that ban, leading to a controversial phone call with Trump in early 2020 that prompted Johnson to postpone his visit to the US.

For some specialists, the restriction could benefit Huawei, since by stopping the Asian giant’s access to American products, China could respond by increasing its own production of technology, aligning itself with the Communist Party’s “Made in China 2025” plan, which could, in turn, boost the economy of the multinational.
