Instagram will eliminate some filters to protect users mental health

The measure will be applied in order to mitigate the adverse effects of the social pressure generated by achieving the badges of success in the network

The famous Instagram social network announced the progressive elimination of all filters from its platform that indirectly promote extreme cosmetic surgery. After an analysis experts say the image change is negatively affecting the self-esteem of users.

The system consists of applying artificial intelligence and machine learning in order to analyze an image, recognize a face and create a three-dimensional mask in which all the facial features are indicated. From there, the user only needs to add the distortions they want on this mask which will be reflected in real time in the image captured by the camera.

Professionals from the world of aesthetics and psychology warn that, in the era of filtered photographs, the popularization of these digital masks is generating false expectations about how a face should look to be considered beautiful.

In accordance with this, those responsible for social networks are aware of the impact that these platforms have on the demanding public.

“For that reason it should not surprise us that they make decisions that, although they may seem unpopular, be designed to protect the well-being of users”, explains Gemma San Cornelio, a researcher specialized in digital culture, artistic practices and new media at the Oberta University of Catalonia (UOC).

In addition, Gemma adds that “the platforms are promoting new lines of study to measure their impact, mitigate their negative effects and promote a healthier use of these technological tools. Networks know they can cause discomfort and, therefore, it seems, they are the first to want to understand the magnitude of the problem and propose solutions.”
