Venezuelans turn to remote work as an alternative to crisis

The physical presence is nowadays less required in certain jobs, so a large percentage of the workforce prefers remote performance, which reduces expenses in transfers and companies lower production costs

Thanks to advances in technology, teleworking has gained ground in the world of work. Currently, dozens of corporations have departments which members work remotely.

In the case of companies, the main reason for accepting work from home is the reduction of operating costs in infrastructure. They can also reduce their bill with the use of satellite offices, which rent is usually lower.

For the worker, especially in scenarios such as the one in Venezuela, the reasons are to reduce expenses derived from transfers from home to the office, the collapse of public services especially transportation and, electrical blackouts, among others.

The current situation of the South American country shows a continued collapse of the public transport system, both superficial and underground. Additionally,  there are the road closures caused by protests which prevent people from arriving at their workplace on time.

By moving to remote work, Venezuelans seek to reduce the concern that these factors produce, to take care of other activities simultaneously, in addition to recovering their quality of life and dedicating time to attend basic necessities, such as looking for food and medicines.

A benefit of this trend for companies is the possible decrease in labor absenteeism that directly affects productivity. However, the option is not always applicable to all companies in Venezuela, as there may be communication problems that include poor Internet connection quality or intermittent service, as well as blackouts.

In any case, remote work, which can also be in the form of freelancer, is an option that Venezuelans are adopting with increasing interest.
