New Zealand will apply customs controls to bitcoiners

New Zealand becomes the last nation to endorse laws granting customs officers unparalleled investigative powers

In New Zealand, laws were enacted that give customs officials the power to conduct investigations that may affect the privacy of travelers. Travelers wit bitcoins should provide their passwords or, if denying to do it, face a fine of $ 5,000. The news was received with alarm by bitcoiners who have reasons to maintain their privacy.

Travelers passing through customs are vulnerable to the intrusion of the State into their personal lives. From cypherpunks to activists, anyone who considers themselves anti-government -despite not representing a tangible threat- is prone to be investigated, to have their laptops inspected and cell phones scrutinized and recently even their passwords are required.

Individuals who refuse to submit the password to their electronic devices at the request of the State can receive a $ 5,000 fine. The search will be limited to the data stored on the electronic devices and not to the accounts that are held in the cloud.

New Zealand’s national security controls are not mentioned in the same way as those of more oppressive nations such as the United States. But the latest customs law has placed the territory at the center of the hurricane and some bitcoiners say they will not return.

Indeed, the new legislation has provoked much concern since the United States could use New Zealand as a corridor to sweep information about an objective that passes through customs. Even though the country is tiny the ramifications of the law are potentially gigantic.
