Venemergencia and the Mayor’s Office of Chacao put Public Access Defibrillators into service
The Venemergencia Foundation together with Salud Chacao have taken a step forward - innovative and decisive - in terms of cardiovascular risk
As part of the articulation of an ecosystem that maximizes access to health for all inhabitants and passers-by of the municipality, the Mayor’s Office of Chacao and the Venemergencia Foundation make history with the launch of the Public Access Defibrillation program (DAP), which makes Chacao the first cardioprotected municipality in the country.
Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in the world. Cardiac arrest is the main complication of these diseases, which without immediate treatment, with cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and defibrillation, leads to death. The chances of survival decrease 10% for every minute that care is delayed.
With the Public Access Defibrillation (PAD) program, anyone, even without professional training, will be able to successfully act as a first responder in their community in situations like this; which multiplies by thousands the probability of timely and effectively addressing medical emergencies.
“By becoming the first cardioprotected municipality in the country, we are once again a reference for the Venezuela we long for. The Automatic External Defibrillators (AED) will be in the main squares and public spaces as a new element to improve the safety and health of all residents,” said Gustavo Duque, mayor of the Chacao municipality.
As a non-profit organization that works on the creation and implementation of community development programs, to promote access to health through education, the Fundación Venemergencia celebrates its 13th anniversary with the launch of this program.
“Thanks to this alliance we are equipping the municipality with Automatic External Defibrillators (AED) and training residents with basic life support training to radically transform citizens’ relationship with pre-hospital health and, above all, with their role within the chain of survival. We want to expand this alliance throughout the country,” said Dr. Andrés Simón González-Silén, president of Venemergencia.
For his part, Dr. Luis Enrique Velásquez, executive director of Venemergencia, said that the DAP, being supported by an educational organization such as the Venemergencia Foundation, will generate the capabilities within the community to effectively address the first stages of cardiovascular emergencies. . “Our goal is to provide access to the equipment and training necessary to guarantee the articulation of people and elements that maximize the probability of successful outcomes, in the face of a medical emergency recognized as the main cause of death in the world.”
To ensure that the entire Chacao community can be part of this initiative, the Fundación Venemergencia and Salud Chacao will measure cardiovascular risk, monitor special cases, and disseminate health information through the Mobile Clinic’s traveling doctors program, they will support the formation of Neighborhood Health Brigades as first responders to any pre-hospital medical emergency and will work to coordinate the movement of neighbors, students, businessmen and volunteer merchants to promote the proper functioning of the program.
