The Vatican asks to allocate more resources to the health field

Cardinal Peter Turkson assured that governments must divert funds allocated to weapons to cover health needs

The Prefect of the Dicastery for Integral Human Development Service and president of the Vatican Commission instituted by the Pope to face the pandemic and its consequences, Peter Turkson, pointed out that one of the ways to achieve peace in the world is to limit the production of weapons and that governments allocate the resources they spend to buy defense material to the health field.

“We cannot face the pandemic if we are fighting or preparing to fight against each other”, said the Ghanaian cardinal at a press conference held in the Holy See Press Room with the title “Preparing the future, building the peace in the time of the Covid-19 ‘.

Thus, he has welcomed the support of 170 countries to the UN’s call for a ceasefire, although he has stressed that “it is one thing to call or support a ceasefire declaration, another thing is to implement it. We need to freeze arms production and trade. The current interconnected crises I have mentioned demonstrate the urgent need for a globalization of solidarity that reflects our global interdependence.”

Turkson indicated that the Church strongly supports peacebuilding projects that are essential for conflict and post-conflict communities to respond to Covid-19. And in this regard, he stated that “without the control of weapons, it is impossible to guarantee security. Without security, the responses to the pandemic are not complete.”
