Robert Kennedy Junior will run as an independent candidate in the US.

The nephew of the legendary John F. Kennedy announced that he will no longer be part of the Democratic Party and will compete in the presidential elections on his own

In a surprising turn, Robert Kennedy Junior, nephew of iconic former US President John Fitzgerald Kennedy (JFK), announced his decision to leave the Democratic Party and run as an independent candidate in the 2024 elections. This unexpected move could have a significant impact on the electoral contest, affecting both the current president, Joe Biden, and the former president, Donald Trump.

The sixty-year-old lawyer, known for his experience in environmental matters, made his mark by raising concerns about the possible adverse effects of the components of the Covid-19 vaccines, alluding to autism.

Kennedy had previously announced his candidacy for president under the Democratic banner, which would have been a direct challenge to President Biden in the primaries. However, he has taken a turn in his political trajectory with his recent statement.

“I am here today to proclaim our independence from the tyranny of corruption,” Kennedy declared to his supporters in Philadelphia. “But to achieve this, I must first assert my own independence: independence from the Democratic Party and all other political parties,” he added, stressing that this decision was carefully considered and painful.

“This was not a decision I made lightly. It is extremely painful for me to leave the party of my uncles, my father, my grandfather and my great-grandparents”, he said.

Kennedy’s decision will put him on the ballot alongside the Democratic and Republican candidates, who are likely to be President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, according to polls. This movement could take away votes from both in an election that is expected to be highly close.

Robert Kennedy Junior is the son of former Attorney General and Democratic presidential candidate Robert Kennedy, who was assassinated in 1968, five years after JFK’s assassination.

Kennedy’s decision has been criticized by several members of his family, who consider it “dangerous.” In a joint statement, they expressed that although he shares the name of his father, he does not share her values, vision or opinions.

For their part, Republicans have described Kennedy as a “democrat disguised as an independent,” calling him an “elitist liberal” in a statement issued by the chair of the Republican National Committee, Ronna McDaniel.
