Olympic Committee suspends Tokyo 2020

The IOC President and the Prime Minister of Japan jointly sent a statement announcing that this event would take place in 2021

On Tuesday, the president of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, and the Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe announced the suspension of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games until next year.

“In the current circumstances and based on the information provided by the WHO, the IOC President and the Prime Minister of Japan concluded that the Games of the XXXII Olympiad in Tokyo should be rescheduled for a date after 2020, but not after the summer 2021, to safeguard the health of athletes, everyone involved in the Olympic Games and the international community”, said the statement sent by both parties.

Much controversy has been experienced around this in recent weeks regarding the celebration of this event, which was one of the last of international stature to be canceled due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Various sports federations and national Olympic committees in recent days requested the postponement of Tokyo 2020

On March 22, the organization had ruled indicating that the possibility of suspending the games was being evaluated, a fact that was finally fulfilled first thing on March 24.
