IMF will seek to provide all necessary support to Lebanon

The director, Kristalina Georgieva, indicated that after the tragedy that occurred days ago the agency is willing to give the necessary aid

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is exploring “all possible ways” to provide financial aid to Lebanon, according to its managing director, Kristalina Georgieva.

“After the terrible tragedy in Lebanon, it is time for national unity: to overcome the disaster but also but to tackle the deep economic and social crisis that the country continues to experience. It is also the time for the international community and the friends of Lebanon stand up and help the country in this moment of urgent need”, explained Georgieva.

The videos on social networks show a strong explosion that gave rise to a large column of smoke, after which there was a second explosion of greater power. The shocks could be felt in the neighboring cities of Tire and Sidon and even in Cyprus, 240 kilometers away.

The authorities declared a state of emergency for Beirut, they have released a budget of 100,000 million Lebanese pounds and have created a commission of inquiry that in five days, starting from Tuesday, must provide its conclusions on the causes of what happened.

The explosions occurred at a time when Lebanon is undergoing a severe economic crisis, the worst since the civil war (1975-1990), and it is feared that the destruction caused by them will directly impact the import of food and other basic products.
