European Parliament recognizes Juan Guaidó as interim president of Venezuela

The vote was reflected in an electronic panel, which counted 439 votes in favor, 104 against and 88 abstentions

This Thursday was known the result of the European Parliament vote on the recognition of Juan Guaidó as interim president of Venezuela, which resulted in 439 votes in favor, 104 against and 88 abstentions.

The Eurochamber “recognizes Juan Guaidó as legitimate interim president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, in accordance with the Venezuelan Constitution,” according to the resolution.

The result becomes a mechanism of pressure for the rest of the countries of the region, as well as for the head of European diplomacy, Federica Mogherini, and the countries of the European Union (EU).

Countries such as Spain, Germany and France were already lobbying for Guaidó to be recognized as interim president, following the decision of the United States, Canada and the Lima Group, if Nicolás Maduro does not call for elections in the coming days. The MEPs have insisted on the countries of the group on the recognition of Guaidó as well as his appointments as representatives.

On the results of the vote it was learned that “the resolution also highlights the initiative promoted by the head of European diplomacy, Federica Mogherini, to launch an International Contact Group that creates the scenario of a dialogue between government and opposition, leading to ‘free’ elections in the country. “
