On April 9, the governments of Venezuela and Russia signed an agreement that includes a robust professional training program, geared towards biotechnological autonomy, with technology transfer for the local production of insulin and other essential biological products for the public health system.

“The alliance between the Russian pharmaceutical company Geropharm and the Ministry of People’s Power for Health focuses on modernizing the Socialist Enterprise for the Production of Biological Medicines (Espromed BIO).”

The main objective of the agreement is to guarantee the supply of medicines, as well as to transform Venezuela into a regional biotechnology production center. The agreement will have two phases:

• Supply Guarantee: Direct import of ready-to-use insulin from St. Petersburg to meet the immediate demand of the public healthcare system.
• Technology Transfer: Adaptation and modernization of Espromed BIO’s installations for the independent manufacturing of vials, cartridges, and injection pens within Venezuela.

“Beyond infrastructure, the agreement includes a robust professional training program. Specialists from both countries have already begun refresher seminars at the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM), addressing critical topics such as integrated diabetes management and the use and application of biosimilar medications.”

In Russia, a group of scientists developed a hearing implant that reduces noise distortion by 17 %, increasing the precision of perception, as it transmits 9 % through the skull bones directly to the inner ear.

Scientists from Perm National Research Polytechnic University collaborated with colleagues from Perm State Medical University and the Russian Medical University to develop a new, more efficient hearing implant.

The implant is a bone conduction hearing aid. By transmitting sound through bone conduction, unlike conventional hearing aids, these devices bypass damaged parts of the auditory system in people with congenital ear abnormalities, trauma, or middle ear diseases.

In this innovation, the Russian engineers elegantly solved the problem of signal distortion and loss that occurs because standard metal fittings do not always guarantee a tight contact between the device’s components, resulting in some vibrations being lost.

The new design features a flat platform for the adapter between the vibrating element and the titanium implant, allowing for a tighter fit and more efficient vibration transmission. A polymer ring was also added to dampen unnecessary vibrations and reduce interference. Tests showed that this design transmits sound better across all frequencies.

Another development by the scientists is a special program for designing a customized hearing implant. According to the engineers, “the doctor inputs the parameters of the skull and bone tissue, and the system automatically builds a 3D model of the adapter, ideal for the individual.”

The reasons these governments cite for moving away from the dollar include adopting local currencies in trade transactions, which strengthens their own currencies, as well as reducing exposure to international sanctions.

It is clear that nations that have limited or prohibited the use of the US dollar seek to free themselves from dependence on its use in trade, in addition to promoting the diversification of reserves into other assets, such as gold.

According to an announcement issued by OPEC+ this Sunday, January 4, the oil alliance led by Saudi Arabia and Russia will maintain a stable crude oil supply at least until April.

The group of oil-producing countries announced the measure without indicating they will take any precautions regarding potential market turbulence following the US military intervention in Venezuela.

The energy and oil ministers of Saudi Arabia, Russia, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Kazakhstan, Algeria, and Oman announced the measure in a teleconference on Sunday, according to a statement published on the website of the Vienna-based Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

The announcement comes in reference to the voluntary production cuts agreed upon in 2023, and in April 2025, these countries “began to gradually reverse those reductions with monthly increases that represented a strategic shift to recover lost market share.”

The group of eight countries still needs to complete a little over one million barrels per day to dismantling the voluntarily cut volumes (one of 2.2 million barrels per day and another of 1.65 million barrels per day), but in November decided to pause monthly increases during the first quarter of 2026, a measure that the ministers reaffirmed on Sunday.

With the aim of offering high-speed internet to the population, Russia is working on a new satellite system that could compete with SpaceX’s American Starlink.

According to recent information, Russia has already begun work on its own satellite system. In this regard, “the head of the state-owned corporation Roscosmos, Dmitry Rogozin, announced the start of the mass deployment of a constellation of satellites in low Earth orbit that will provide broadband internet in the coming months.”

This is a joint initiative between a private company and Roscosmos, and, according to Rogozin, it will offer customers services “exactly analogous to those already standardized in the global market, guaranteeing high-speed internet access anywhere on the planet, even in the most remote and hard-to-reach regions.”

The project will be implemented in two phases: the first, starting in December of this year, will include the launch of 300 satellites; and the second will add another 900 satellites to the constellation.

It is important to note that in-orbit tests have yielded satisfactory results, and the prototype satellites have been refined. The Russian government plans to launch the satellites in batches of 16 per launch vehicle, with an estimation of two years to complete the deployment.
