On April 9, the governments of Venezuela and Russia signed an agreement that includes a robust professional training program, geared towards biotechnological autonomy, with technology transfer for the local production of insulin and other essential biological products for the public health system.
“The alliance between the Russian pharmaceutical company Geropharm and the Ministry of People’s Power for Health focuses on modernizing the Socialist Enterprise for the Production of Biological Medicines (Espromed BIO).”
The main objective of the agreement is to guarantee the supply of medicines, as well as to transform Venezuela into a regional biotechnology production center. The agreement will have two phases:
- Supply Guarantee: Direct import of ready-to-use insulin from St. Petersburg to meet the immediate demand of the public healthcare system.
- Technology Transfer: Adaptation and modernization of Espromed BIO’s installations for the independent manufacturing of vials, cartridges, and injection pens within Venezuela.
“Beyond infrastructure, the agreement includes a robust professional training program. Specialists from both countries have already begun refresher seminars at the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM), addressing critical topics such as integrated diabetes management and the use and application of biosimilar medications.”
