According to Velarde, Peru showed significant progress in this area in 2025, “and currently almost all of its productive sectors operate in this way.”

Velarde emphasized that in Peru, monetary digitization has a different focus than simply replacing the cash that citizens had to carry, instead orienting itself towards “a completely different modernization process, which is currently being applied in almost all productive activities.”

The official estimates that by the end of 2026, the South American country will have made significant progress in implementing “a platform that will be extremely powerful in terms of digital payments, which will have a major impact on the country’s rural areas.”

Technological evolution, the democratization of internet access, and the rise of social media have contributed to this increase in users, who seek to stay in touch with family, conduct research, shop online, or simply be entertained with music, videos, or digital games.

The Digital Report 2026 indicates that “the number of internet users worldwide increased by 294 million (+5.1%) in the last year, but the differences between countries are enormous.” Of the more than 6 billion people connected, 96 % do so via mobile devices.

According to the report, “the ranking of countries with the highest internet penetration is led by Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, and the United Arab Emirates, where 99 % of the population is connected. This is a very different reality from that of other countries such as Burundi (11.1 %) or the Central African Republic (12 %). Data for North Korea is less readily available, but the study places internet penetration among its inhabitants at less than 1%.”

Regarding the raw data on the total connected population, China leads with 1.3 billion users, followed by India with 1.02 billion. Interestingly, India is precisely the country with the highest number of “unconnected” users, with 440 million people who still do not use the internet. As for Spain, its penetration rate is 96.4 %, placing it in 18th position.

Every week, more than a billion people contact businesses through Meta applications to answer questions about their products and services, seek help or simply to interact with their content.

This relationship between the user and a small business has been extended with the possibility of buying products directly from the chat thread, as reported by Instagram in a statement. This possibility will be available as long as the business is qualified by the platform.

The user, just by starting a conversation with the business, can, in addition to answering their questions, place a purchase order and pay it instantly using Meta Pay. From this conversation thread you will also be able to track your order.

The novelty of the social network allows small businesses to start selling through Instagram before establishing their digital commerce in the stores of this platform and Facebook.

In its official account on the social network Twitter, the federal government published that in “2024 it will have its own digital currency in circulation, considering these new technologies and the latest-generation payment infrastructure as highly valuable options to advance in financial inclusion in the country”.

Recently Alejandro Díaz de León, Governor of Banxico, said that the financial institution has been working on a procedure that allows transactions to be carried out at lower costs.

“It is very important to distinguish that the concept that the Bank has is an extension of the fiduciary money that we use and that allows us to have transactions with agility and opportunity with lower costs, but that does not imply the risks or financial disintermediation that could cause any solution. It is very different that it is not within the same monetary architecture” the governor stressed.

Virtual currencies facilitate online trading

As it will be recalled, the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has indicated that digital currencies or CBDCs are important for the modernization of finance and to be able to guarantee that large technology companies are not the ones that control these capitals.

Fifty-six central banks of the world and monetary authorities, since last June, are analyzing the possibility and global convenience of creating digital currencies in different countries in a context where trade and many economic activities move to the online world.

In October 2021, the Bahamas was the first country in the world to launch its CBDC baptized as Sand Dollar, while Switzerland and the central bank of France are running a cross-border experiment in Europe, while China has also been running several experiments.

In a statement, the technology giant explained that the founder of the company will be replaced as CEO by Andy Jassy, until now in charge of Amazon Web Services (AWS), a subsidiary of the company.

Bezos, one of the richest men in the world, will thus retire from his position at the head of the company he founded 27 years ago after a last year in which the company’s results have been boosted by the growth of electronic commerce as consequence of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Specifically, the e-commerce company closed 2020 with profits of $ 21.3 billion, which is equivalent to doubling the result obtained in the same period last year, which amounted to $ 11.6 billion.

Likewise, the Seattle-based technology giant’s net turnover in the last year amounted to 386,064 million dollars, 38 % more than in the same period of the previous year.

“Amazon is what it is thanks to invention”, said Bezos, who has valued the “pioneering” character of the company to innovate and invent.

“If you get it right, a few years after an amazing invention, the new has become normal. People yawn. That yawn is the highest compliment an inventor can get. When you look at our financial results, what you are really seeing is the Long-term cumulative results of the invention. Right now I see Amazon at its most inventive moment, which makes it an optimal time for this transition”, said the current CEO.
