Jeff Bezos resigns as CEO of Amazon

The founder of the online commerce company will remain as president and his current functions will be executed by Andy Jassy

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos will step down as CEO of the company in the third quarter of this year and will move to the role of president of the company.

In a statement, the technology giant explained that the founder of the company will be replaced as CEO by Andy Jassy, until now in charge of Amazon Web Services (AWS), a subsidiary of the company.

Bezos, one of the richest men in the world, will thus retire from his position at the head of the company he founded 27 years ago after a last year in which the company’s results have been boosted by the growth of electronic commerce as consequence of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Specifically, the e-commerce company closed 2020 with profits of $ 21.3 billion, which is equivalent to doubling the result obtained in the same period last year, which amounted to $ 11.6 billion.

Likewise, the Seattle-based technology giant’s net turnover in the last year amounted to 386,064 million dollars, 38 % more than in the same period of the previous year.

“Amazon is what it is thanks to invention”, said Bezos, who has valued the “pioneering” character of the company to innovate and invent.

“If you get it right, a few years after an amazing invention, the new has become normal. People yawn. That yawn is the highest compliment an inventor can get. When you look at our financial results, what you are really seeing is the Long-term cumulative results of the invention. Right now I see Amazon at its most inventive moment, which makes it an optimal time for this transition”, said the current CEO.
