According to Suárez, the mining of the crypto MiamiCoin has generated 5 million dollars in the last 30 days and has a projection of collection of approximately 60 million dollars. “It is generating $ 2,000 every 10 minutes and more than $ 5 million in the last 30 days, so it is on track to raise around $ 60 million (…) It is not an involuntary tax and it is not philanthropy,” explained Suárez.

The bitcoin blockchain network is operating the MiamiCoin token, the mining process of which brings “revenue to the administration of the city of Miami.”

Last September 13, the delegates from Miami approved a protocol that establishes that “30 % of the coins that are mined will be transferred to a digital wallet of the city, to be used as funds for the financing of community projects.”

Taxes in bitcoin

Since the beginning of the year the commissioners of the city of Miami have been carrying out some actions regarding crypto assets. In February, Mayor Francis Suárez issued an ordinance where he established that basic services, taxes and salaries would be paid with bitcoin, making the US municipality the first to adopt cryptocurrencies.

The representatives of the municipality, at that time, led by Suárez, decided to adopt bitcoin and requested “that the digital asset be part of the local treasure reserve.”

The mayor of the American city, Francis Suárez, has always been seen as an advocate for cryptocurrencies, and bitcoin in particular.

Last June, on the occasion of the Bitcoin 2021 conference in Miami, Suárez said he was very happy that his city was chosen to succeed Los Angeles as the venue for the conference and commented that for months an unprecedented amount of companies, technology companies and investors had chosen her to move in.

In this ecosystem of the global digital economy, Miami wants to become the new Silicon Valley, with the city’s ruler as the catalyst for the paradigm of financial freedom, innovation and new products and services.

Suárez indicated that there is a great attraction in the city, related to the nuclear energy capacity that the city has.

During an interview that the mayor gave, he spoke about the general perspective that society has regarding this activity, indicating that many have created a “war” against mining due to the harmful cash that it would have against the environment.

Nuclear energy would have been proposed as a clean and licit energy option for the performance of the activity. Suárez also put solar and hydrogen energy as an alternative that could be considered as options in the near future.

Suárez explained that it all started last December, when a Twitter user wrote: “Ok guys, listen to me, what if we moved from Silicon Valley to Miami? To which Suárez responded, also on that platform, “How can I help?”

In addition to the great weather and diverse population, he noted that low taxes have proven to be a great incentive that serves to “prepare Miami for the future and create the next generation of leaders right here at home.”

And he specified that these companies will bring “high-quality and well-paid jobs to our city.”

According to Suarez, Miami and Miami-Dade County generate the largest number of African American and Hispanic engineers in the country, but run the future risk of being left out or unprepared for many jobs.

He added that the Covid-19 pandemic has played an important role in the decision of these financial and technology companies to relocate or open permanent offices in Miami, as the number of companies that switch to a virtual work environment increases.
