Chile approves project for new Constitution

This Monday, the project for a new Constitution in Chile was approved. In the event that citizens reject the proposal again, the current document will remain in force

The project for a new Constitution in Chile was approved this Monday by the Constitutional Council. President Gabriel Boric will receive the document on November 7.

The previous call, as will be remembered, was rejected by the population. Given this new project for a new Magna Carta, it must be taken into account that if the same response occurred, a third plebiscite could not be called, and the current instrument in Chile would remain in force.

According to the EFE news agency, “the text, which has 17 chapters and 216 articles, had votes in favor of the far-right Republican Party (22) and the right-wing coalition Chile Vamos (11), and votes against of the 17 councilors of the ruling left.”

According to a survey by the consulting firm Cadem, published on Sunday, expectations are not favorable regarding the approval of the project in a referendum, as sentiment remains against it. The intention to vote for and against is currently at 34 % and 51 %, respectively.

It is timely to remember that the first plebiscite for a new Constitution took place in 2021, after the overwhelming approval on October 25, 2020, in favor of a change to the Pinochet Constitution.

The new proposal naturally has its followers and detractors. Those who support it point out that the text guarantees freedom, liberty and provides economic and legal certainty; while those against argue that it is “partisan”, in addition to perpetuating the neoliberal model of the current Constitution.
