Through the newspaper The Sydney Morning Herald were published details of the sentence in Australia to a former employee of the Commonwealth Office of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIRO) on the charge of mining cryptocurrencies at his workplace.

The defendant, Jonathan Khoo, was discovered using the company’s equipment for cryptocurrency mining. These are supercomputers, highly sophisticated equipment that the accused had at his disposal due to his high position in the agency.

The gains obtained, improperly, amount to about 5,810 euros (9,420 AUD) in Ethereum and Monero. The case began in February 2018, when the now detainee installed external software to the computers assigned to him and that had great power. This way he had quick access to the tokens.

Damage to equipment due to the need to fully exploit its mining capacity was considerable. The CSRIO spokesperson has indicated that the cost to the organization for this activity for the personal enrichment of the culprit amounts to 47,284 euros.

Regarding the sentence issued by the Australian authorities, it is known that Khoo will have to serve a sentence of 300 hours of community service. The sentence is speculated to be modest, compared to penalties of up to 10 years in prison, due to the low amount of money accumulated from his illegal mining activity.
