Amazon plans to open gigantic physical stores

Amazon plans to open a series of large physical stores in the United States that will operate in a similar way to department stores to boost sales of clothing, household goods and electronics from the e-commerce giant founded by Jeff Bezos, they told The Wall Street Journal sources familiar with the situation.

The plan, which would represent a new step for the pioneer of online commerce in the physical retail space, after the opening of bookstores and supermarkets, contemplates that the first Amazon department stores are located in Ohio and California.

The new commercial spaces will have an area of ​​just under 3,000 square meters, smaller than most department stores, which normally occupy about 10,000 square meters, and will offer items from the main consumer brands, with a footprint similar to the formats small businesses that have begun opening commercial stores such as Bloomingdale’s, Nordstrom and other chain stores.

In this sense, the sources consulted by the reference newspaper on Wall Street pointed out that it is not clear which brands Amazon will offer in these stores, although it is expected that the company’s brand products will occupy a prominent place, although they stressed that the plans they are not final yet and could change.

Founded in 1994 as an online bookstore, Amazon has been gaining ground in physical retail through the opening of bookstores, grocery stores, and other physical spaces. In this sense, Amazon acquired the Whole Foods Market supermarket chain in 2017.
