Server failure causes several web portals to crash

An error in Fastly's distribution network caused different media, social networks, among others, to not be operational

An error in the distribution network (CDN) of the Fastly server caused the fall of many web pages around the world this Tuesday, including media such as the New York Times, The Guardian, CNN, AS or La Sexta, and networks social networks like Twitch or Reddit.

When trying to access the pages, users reported the appearance of a message stating ‘Error 503 Service Unavailable’ when they tried to access media and social platforms.

The official website of the United Kingdom Government has also been affected, as well as Amazon, eBay or Spotify. Many websites cannot be viewed yet, but some media such as New York Times and La Sexta are already available.

On its Status page, Fastly indicated at noon that it was investigating a “potential impact on the performance of its CDN services”, although in the morning it reported that it had identified the fault, which it has not detailed, and implemented a correction.
