European Commission to invest in cyber attack prevention

The European body will allocate more than 40 million dollars in infrastructure protection, both physical and in the cloud

The European Commission announced that it will allocate more than $ 40 million to finance five projects in the field of protecting key infrastructure from both cyber attacks and physical threats, as well as to achieve safer and ‘smarter’ cities.

The funds will come from the Horizon 2020 program, the Community research and innovation strategy and the selected projects will begin to run between this month and October, and then run for two years.

Thus, three of them will be focused on improving the prevention, detection, response and mitigation of cyber attacks and physical threats to metro and railway networks, space infrastructures on the ground and satellites and e-commerce services.

The other two projects pursue the objective of reinforcing the solidity of infrastructure and city services, as well as the protection of citizens, in cases of security incidents in public spaces.

“Greater investments at EU and national level in innovative cybersecurity technologies and solutions are of vital importance in strengthening Europe’s resilience to cyber attacks”, said Commissioner for Internal Market Thierry Breton.
