London and Brussels begin negotiations for possible agreements

If an understanding is not reached, the economic consequences will be important for the United Kingdom

This Monday began negotiations between the United Kingdom and the European Union to comply with the provisions of the British government of Boris Johnson who set June as the deadline for a first balance of the negotiations.

In this regard, early this Monday the meeting between the European negotiator, Michel Barnier, and his counterpart David Frost, at the headquarters of the European Commission, marked the opening to discussions that should lead to an agreement by the end of the year.

After the meeting, the European negotiator Barnier tweeted: “We approached these negotiations with a constructive spirit. We want to agree on an ambitious and fair partnership.” He also said that in the discussion he made clear that his goal is “a free trade agreement that fully respects political autonomy and UK regulations.”

No plan “B”

Despite the “constructive” tone that has been set by Barnier and his counterpart, time is under pressure and may be somewhat short to finalize a trade agreement that would take years in the European Union. However, the discussions focus on the following points: free trade agreement and conditions of competition, dispute settlement and fishing.

The first round of negotiation will end next Thursday and Barnier is expected to take stock before the media.
