Sony works in a wireless VR helmet

The company wants to incorporate this technological tool to the PlayStation 5 next year

Sony is working on a new Virtual Reality (VR) helmet model with the novelty that it will not need any wire to connect to the PlayStation or the PC, and will have a new way to detect if the helmet is properly placed.

Sony patented on December 12 at the United States Patent and Trademark Office the new Virtual Reality helmet model, which has built-in technology.

The new model of HMD patented by Sony seeks to solve the problem related to the correct placement of the helmet. In existing models, pupil eye tracking is used which, by cameras and computational vision or machine learning, is able to detect the correct position of the eyes.

The main problem of this technique is that the pupils do not always enter the field of vision of the cameras. In addition, those users who use contact lenses or glasses can complicate this recognition, making this technique not always effective.

Sony’s new patent uses ultrasound transducers to detect the user’s eye position. These emit ultrasound signals, which can be transmitted through the user’s skin. But transducers can also receive the reflection of this signal, thereby forming a digital image of the user’s eye.

Among the new features that it incorporates, it is worth highlighting that the HMD is capable of receiving video and audio signals wirelessly. In addition to that they are working on reducing the reflection in the user’s eyes.
