Facebook and Twitter close numerous fake profiles

Facebook warned of a great interference in Latin America, closing four complex false networks, three of them from Iran and one from Russia

180 accounts, 26 Facebook pages and 87 Instagram profiles were removed from the interaction platforms due to their link with the distribution of false information and also the intention to urge revolts against some Latin American governmens. From the profiles of both social networks were launched fake messages against the governments of Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador and Chile.

According to Nathaniel Gleicher, head of Facebook Cybersecurity, the focus of a good part of these disinformation operations and that are now dismantled belonged to Venezuela, Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador and Mexico, with an estimated total of more than 75,000 followers in the continent. Administrators could hide their real location through virtual private network.

Fake networks interference in elections

In a Facebook announcement, the founder of the social network, Mark Zuckerberg, testified that he was convinced that Russia and Iran are still trying to interfere in elections around the world. “But we are also convinced,” said Zuckerberg, “that our defenses are now more sophisticated and we are better at identifying and solving these problems.”

In April, Google temporarily closed the YouTube and Gmail accounts of several Iranian state media, including Hispan TV and Press TV, for alleged violation of its rules of use. Given this, some Israeli media claimed that the closure was in fact due to the publication of several false news about alleged medical experiments on Palestinian prisoners, which in turn led to allegations of anti-Semitism in the United States against the Iranian media.
