Considerable losses occur in food production

According to the United Nations Food Organization, at least one third of the food is wasted in several stages of creation, distribution and other

In the process of food production in the world, part of it is lost or wasted, either in storage, distribution, sale, and even when it is in the hands of the consumer.

“The problem varies throughout the chain. In less developed countries, it is more frequently at the time of production or post-harvest, in which there are many losses, while in the more developed it is more concentrated in the consumption stage, when food is thrown from the refrigerator or dishes ”, detailed Eve Crowley, deputy regional representative for Latin America and the Caribbean of FAO, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (UN).

According to the numbers collected by this organism, at least one third of the food produced in the world is wasted.

“If that level of loss or waste does not exist we could feed many more people. In the region we could eliminate hunger. Therefore, this is a fairly strong fact. It shows a significant inefficiency”, Crowley added.

By 2030, in the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the organization aims to reduce the gap by half in the food waste per capita “in retail and consumer level sales.”

The public policy expert said that the path for this to be possible is still long, but the most important thing to note is that this is the great goal of the UN for the next 10 years.
