Bolivia and its challenge in the digital world

The South American country has one of the slowest Internet services and this compromises its progress towards the universe of cryptocurrencies

The incipient technological development and its inevitable consequence in the low interest of the population in topics such as Internet, keep countries like Bolivia limited to venture into the universe of the new economy, based on digital transactions and digital currencies.

Although citizens with access to Internet now have faster connections, they are not yet enough to face the challenge of the digital age. Mobile services are efficient but expensive. In addition, there is the crucial issue of the lack of knowledge of a large percentage of the population, since thousands do not even know what the Internet is. Another aspect is the lack of access to this technology due to being in remote areas or lack of equipments for navigate.

These factors make Bolivia’s access to scenarios such as the digital universe of cryptocurrencies or blockchain technology very distant. To this must be added the regulations promulgated in 2014 by the Central Bank of Bolivia that prohibit any transaction in currencies not issued by banks, countries or economic zones and authorized by the local government, as a security measure and prevention of fraud and other crimes.
