Russia did not use Facebook to influence brexit referendum

Facebook Vice President Nick Clegg said there is absolutely no evidence that Russia influenced the brexit referendum via Facebook

The director of the well-known social network said that Facebook has analyzed their data and has not found any significant attempt that external forces tried to influence the vote during the referendum of the brexit.

It is worth remembering that the United Kingdom chose to break with the European Union on 23 June 2016 because the rootedness of the British Eurosceptic had reached very deep. The British have been much more influenced by traditional media over the last 40 years than by new technologies.

There is clearly an urgent need to establish new rules on privacy, the use of people’s data and the establishment of issues covered by hate speech.

Nick Clegg was questioned about whether it should not be the company itself that solves some of these problems on its own and said it is not something that technology companies can or should do on their own.

“It’s not private companies, small or large, that have to set those standards. It’s something that democratic politicians have to do in a democratic world,” he said.

He also recognized that brands such as Facebook should play a mature and leading role in defending regulation. It is worth emphasizing that the social network last year was fined 500,000 pounds, approximately 565,000 euros.

The sanction was applied because Facebook allowed an apparent violation of personal data protection laws in connection with the Cambridge Analytica scandal.
