China’s manufacturing sector fell in May

After presenting growth during the two previous months, the Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) was positioned at 49.4%

The activity of the Chinese manufacturing sector fell during the month of May, after having grown in the two previous months, according to the purchasing managers’ index (PMI) of the manufacturing sector, which stood at 49.4% from 50,1% in April, according to the National Statistics Office of China coinciding with the upsurge of trade tensions with the US.

The contraction of the manufacturing activity was particularly visible among Chinese SMEs, where the index stood at 48.8% in the case of the mediated companies and 47.8% in the case of the small companies, registering a drop of 3% and 2%, respectively.

In the case of large companies, the index stood at 50.3%, half a percentage point less than in April, but still in expansive territory.

Also, the Chinese statistical office indicated that the activity index of non-manufacturing sector companies remained stable in May at 54.3%, including a reading of 53.5% in the service sector, two tenths more than in April, while the index of the construction sector fell by 1.5 percentage points, to 58.6%.

In this way, the composite index of purchasing managers of the Chinese economy stood at 53.3% in May, one tenth below the reading corresponding to the previous month.
