President of Panama recognizes Guaidó

Panama's President-elect Laurentino Cortizo will maintain the recognition of Juan Guaidó and questions the Lima Group

The president of Panama Laurentino “Nito” Cortizo reported that his government will maintain recognition of leader Juan Guaidó as interim president of Venezuela and questioned the role of the Lima Group in seeking a solution to the crisis facing the South American country.

It is worth noting that Panama is one of more than 50 countries that recognize Guaidó as Venezuela’s interim president, as the later declared himself on January 23. Likewise, Panama is part of the so-called Lima Group, whose role was questioned by Cortizo who will assume power next July 1st for a period of 5 years.

The president assured that he will use the historical role of “composer” that the country has had in the diverse conflicts of the region to try to impel that all the parts involved in the Venezuelan crisis settle the dialogue.

The Venezuelan crisis entered a stage of worsening with the assumption of Nicolás Maduro’s second consecutive term and Guaidó’s declaration as elected president. This stage includes a failed uprising against Maduro, as well as the imposition of international sanctions by the United States on senior government officials.

Maenwhile, millions of Venezuelans have left their country, which has been described by the UN as one of the greatest migratory crises the continent has experienced in decades.
