EU will fine parties that violate data protection in elections

The body has just approved the regulations applicable to political parties that incur in the use of voter data to influence the elections of the European Parliament

The EU has indicated that it will fine the political parties and political organizations that incur in the manipulation of the voter data in the elections of the European Parliament that will take place from May 23 to 26 with the purpose of influencing the campaign.

The Council of the European Union wants to avoid cases like the Cambridge Analytica scandal that used an application “to collect millions of Facebook user data that were used to influence the election campaign of US President Donald Trump, and the Brexit referendum in 2016. “

Taking into account these risks, the agency recently adopted new measures applicable to parties and political foundations of member states through economic sanctions.

The procedure will include verification to clarify whether a violation of the EU General Data Protection Regulation is related to political activities in the framework of the elections to the European Parliament.

The decision, which will be in the hands of an independent committee, will result in deposits that would “rise to 5% of the annual budget of the European party or foundation involved and, in addition, the following year could not receive funds from the budget of the EU”.
